How To Detox The Right Way

How To Detox | Ashley Gotschall Nutrition

Did you know that whether you want it to, or not, your body is constantly detoxifying? Your body is constantly filtering and eliminating toxic, foreign bodies from your body through a biochemical reaction that takes place naturally. When we support our bodies to detoxify through a cleanse or detox, many often turn to juice fasting or an extremely low caloric intake and while juicing in and of itself is never a bad idea, in fact it's a fantastic way to flood your body with nutrients. The problem, however, is that the detoxifying process can get halted in what's called phase 2 where fat-soluble toxins need to be made more water-soluble in order to be eliminated. This stagnation in that phase is what actually leads to disease and fatigue because the body is being overloaded with toxins that can not be converted to a more elimination-friendly state. The toxins that do make it to phase 3 are needing to be eliminated, but that requires an essential nutrient: fiber, which is not found in juice.

A good way to look at this is, as Dr. Mikell Parsons says, it's sort of like a car that has been given oil, but not gasoline, yet it's expected to drive from New York to California. You probably won't get very far.

So, in order to help the body complete the process there are certain nutrients it needs; amino acids, B vitamins, minerals (sulfur), fiber and more. This is why cleansing and detoxing through means of fasting such as a juice fast only gets you so far, in fact it only allows the body to get through the first phase of detoxification, the final phase requires fiber to carry out the elimination process.

Juicing is a great way to start your detox, and doing that for 1/2 - 1 day, or more specifically 12-24 hours at most (ideal time for fasting), that's great, but just make sure to remember the detox is not over, you must incorporate whole foods in the form of fiber, protein, minerals and vitamins to then finish and complete detoxifying in the body.

Finally, detoxing should be done on a constant or continuous basis. Doing a great detox and then quickly going right back to those bad habits can actually cause more harm than good. Something else to remember is that toxins, fat, and cellulite all take years to accumulate in the body, so you can't expect a three day, or seven day detox to be complete. These detox habits should be an everyday basis. Everyday you should be assisting your body in eliminating harmful toxins by eating (or slurping) plenty of fiber Even my own three-day Pocket|Detox is simply a starter to your journey in constant cleansing. Incorporating those recipes into your every day life, Just like with any bodily process or lifelong change, it's not an overnight health revolution, it's a process. A step-by-step, habit change-by habit change, slow and steady. The key is consistency and that, my friend, is what continuous or constant cleansing is all about!

Here are some tips to get you started with continuous cleansing:

  1. Start each morning with hot lemon water to get that liver flushed and digestion system a jump-start.
  2. Incorporate hemp into your diet for amino acid + protein boost. Try hemp protein!
  3. Drink plenty of water throughout the day (I know you already know this one!).
  4. Wake up 15 minutes early to clear your mind, think about your day and de-stress.
  5. Include sulfuric rich foods in your diet such as cabbage, asparagus, broccoli.

One note for pregnant and breastfeeding women, the reason it's not recommend to complete a detox during this time is because while your body is expelling these toxins, it will do so through any means possible, sweat glands, bodily fluids, and even breastmilk. So, it's important not to do any detoxing that incorporates detoxifying herbs, supplements, etc. while you are pregnant or breastfeeding. That said, it is still important to keep up with this idea of constant cleansing and keep your healthy, whole, nutritious food choices healthy. This means low, to no sugar, high protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals from both plant and grass-fed, hormone + antibiotic-free animal sources.
